Dear Subscriber
If you missed out on the latest newsletters you can see them here.
The mornings and evenings have that crispness about them that is unmistakably a sign that autumn is well and truly here. Soon the winter rains will fall and hopefully, offer some relief to the current water situation.
The City of Cape Town recently issued the following media release for those that are concerned about the current municipal water quality. Click here to read more.
With the change in season, we must consider those less fortunate than ourselves, in saying this we hope that you will get involved and sponsor a poncho or support the Animal Rescue Organisation's Easter drive. You can read more about these two great causes further down. Thank you to the businesses that have already donated to the sponsor a poncho fund they are listed below.

The Time To Say Goodbye: Euthanasia is never an easy decision but one that you do not have to make on your own.
In 2014 we addressed the 'when', 'why' and 'how' of euthanasia. This difficult and emotive subject is one we face on a daily basis in our practice and we feel it is time to approach this subject again. Please take note of ‘what to expect’.

In an effort to protect the rights of tenants, the Rental Housing Act lists certain provisions that are deemed to be included in each and every rental agreement of residential accommodation. Whether you are a landlord or tenant, whether your lease agreement is in writing or was concluded orally, the deemed provisions are applicable to the agreement. It does not matter whether the landlord and tenant did not specifically negotiate these terms. Read the complete article by STBB Claremont here.
Take-away foods are never an ideal choice, but what do you do when life is chaotic and your family has decided on takeaways? Fast-food restaurants have bad reputations, with the foods being high in 'empty' calories (there's only energy and no healthy nutrients), fat (particularly trans- and saturated fat), refined carbohydrates and salt.
However, many fast-food chains have tried to incorporate ‘healthier’ options of their favourite items on their menus. So, if you limit your takeaways to the absolute minimum and are clever about your choices, you won’t spoil your health or weight loss efforts completely. Kim Hofmann identifies better choice food options from the most popular fast food chains read her article here.
Catch up on happenings with the Friends of Harfield Parks.
Water shortages are still a very real problem. Please do your best to continue saving water and to assist us by watering the trees in the parks with your grey water.
Join the Friends of Harfield Parks for as little as R25 per month and you can contribute towards maintaining and beautifying our parks.
Funds raised are used to fund labour (weeding & cleaning) and make improvements (irrigation, gym equipment, flower & vegetable beds, etc.) in all four Village parks (Surrey, Hampstead, Princes, Purley).
Payments can be made via a monthly debit order or by SnapScan. Click here to complete a Membership form to join this worthy cause.
In the last week or two, there have been numerous reported criminal incidents in the Village and surrounds. The modus operandi is not new but it would appear that we need to remind people on how to prevent such incidents.
We have been made aware of persons claiming to be City of Cape Town officials and requesting access to resident's properties to inspect issues relating to water or electricity. Whether the person is an official from the City, a Telkom technician, private security company representative or even a member of SAPS, you must insist on seeing identification.

This month Lyn shares a quick and easy vegetarian dish. Lyn's BUTTER BEAN STROGANOFF is simple to make and can be served as a main course or a salad.
We are seeing great growth in our garden! All plants have been watered from our shower and kitchen sink water. We literally haven't turned the hose on to water the grass, veggies or plants even once since November 1st, 2016.
It is however so sad that it took a near-drought to make us realise what we should have been doing all along. But live and learn, we do! Click here to see the latest gardening tip from Patchwork.
Do you want to maximise the results of your exercise but also minimise the time it takes? What a question!
This old-school strategy has had a face-lift and it’s likely you’ve heard at least one person talk about it in the last year or two. However, it’s just as likely that you don’t really know what its all about, so Dr Murray McDonald from the Claremont Chiropractic Centre is clearing things up. Read his article here.
The latest DIY tip from Norgarb Properties Agents Andre and Lucia is a water wise one.
They highlight a Claremont-based company, that can assist in enabling you to save water which would have otherwise ended up in the drain.
If you need to fill your pool, water your garden or fill up your water tank you should read their article.
Estate agents sell convenience, time management and transaction knowledge, but what sets them apart from one another is great market intelligence and, above all, superior negotiating skills!
The latter is not often fully appreciated by home sellers until the agent comes into play to save a deal which is about to fall through. Top agents are invaluable every step of the way when selling your home, starting with the listing presentation.

Why is it that when we see, hear or even read about somebody yawning we often have the intense desire to yawn as well?
Approximately half of those who read this article will feel like yawning! Not because you didn’t get enough sleep last night, or because the article is boring!
Dr Samantha J. Brooks Ph.D. shares the neuroscience behind yawning. Read her article here.

(Residents implement an amazing project to keep local school kids dry. Hats off to them for this very cool initiative)
Having to start your school day sopping wet and freezing cold sounds like a nightmare situation for most of us. Unfortunately, this is the reality for a large number of learners in South Africa that make use of public transport to get to and from school daily.
This year the Sponsor a Poncho team want to change that for the children from a local Harfield Village primary school and with the school's permission, they started the 'SPONSOR A PONCHO' campaign.
The aim of the campaign is to raise funds to purchase quality reusable rain ponchos for each of the 680 children at the school. (each poncho costs R45)
To date, they have managed to collect sufficient funds for almost 550 ponchos.
The Harfield Village community has been incredible in their response to the project and the team wish to thank everyone that has contributed thus far. They are also very thankful for the following businesses that have come on board:
Urban Village: R500
Rotary Club of Claremont: R10 000
There is still some way to go before they reach their final goal and meet their end of April deadline, which will ensure that the children receive their ponchos before the winter starts in earnest.
This is a fantastic initiative and there are various ways that you can get involved simply host a “poncho party” or make a donation find out more here.
