Dear Subscriber
If you missed out on any of the latest newsletters you can see them here.
As year-end approaches, most of the public holidays behind us, some may feel a little drained. With that feeling and the change in season one can be susceptible to colds and flu. Best to keep warm, exercise and eat correctly all in preparation for Summer!
It’s time to start planning for the end of the year, and should you be going away wanting to utilise Kenilworth Cattery, please note that they are fully booked for December. Alternative arrangements for your loved pets at a cattery or kennels need to be booked now.
Remember to inform your security company of your absence and whether there will be a house-sitter at your home. Ensure that the house-sitter knows the contact details of the security company that you use.
Should you wish to make use of a house-sitter or pet-sitter for the festive season you should contact them now before they become fully booked. Try one of the house or pet sitting services listed on our website.

Animal Rescue plea for collars and leads.
Animal Rescue Organisation have 3 mobile clinics visiting impoverished areas on a daily basis.
They also manage a full time clinic from premises in Ottery. The Animal Welfare Assistants are constantly in need of decent collars and leads.
Many of their clients cannot afford either. They often bring their dogs to the clinic with rope, wire, telephone wire and string around their dogs' neck, often with sore red and bleeding wounds by the time they get to the clinic.
They are appealing to anyone who is willing to donate collars and/or leads to please drop them off at Norgarb Properties or to sponsor a collar and lead for R50, which they will purchase and distribute on your behalf.
Your donation can be done via Zapper or into the ARO bank account: Animal Rescue Organisation ABSA 632 005 cheque account 4086080569 email with proof of payment.
Water Restrictions and Tariff Hikes
The water situation in the country remains dire. As a result the City of Cape Town is asking us to please water our gardens and wash our cars using ONLY a bucket or watering can.
NO hosepipes or irrigation!
As of 1 November fines will be issued for those found contravening these restrictions.
From December the City of Cape Town will be increasing the tariff for water much as they have done with electricity - so the more you use the more you pay.

Harfield Village Carnival 2017 Cancelled
The annual Harfield Village Carnival is a great fundraiser for the Harfield Village Association and the Friends of Harfield Parks. However it takes a huge amount of time and planning to make sure that the event occurs without a glitch.
It is organised by Harfield Village Association members who are made up entirely of a voluntary group of local residents that for the most part have full time jobs and/or other commitments. It is with these pressures that they have made the call to not host the Carnival next year as they would not be happy with a part organised event.
They regret not being able to host the 2017 Carnival and instead will focus their efforts to ensuring that the 2018 Harfield Village Carnival is indeed a spectacular occasion.
In lieu of the Carnival Fundraiser the Friends of Harfield Parks are planning a Plant Sale Day in one of the parks. Watch this space for more info!

Veterinarians are finding that their clients refer to the powers of the internet and its vast expanse of data, to find out about medicines, understand diseases and even sometimes obtain diagnoses for their pets.
But as the old saying goes ‘don’t believe everything you read.’
The internet can be a dangerous place for misinformation, so this month Kenilworth Vet take a deep look at Dr Google and explain why you still need your vet!
Close Corporations and Tax Returns
Deregistration of close corporations and companies is a common occurrence, often resulting from the failure to submit annual tax returns. Last year CIPC reported that it planned to undertake the bulk deregistration of some 345 000 non-compliant entities in the foreseeable future to clean up its database. STBB goes into detail in this month's article click here to view it.
Sugar vs Saturated Fats
There has been a lot of negative publicity regarding sugar over the last few months, in fact years.
Last month a study was published indicating that the sugar industry had funded research years ago blaming saturated fats for heart disease and taking the blame away from sugar.
What does that mean?
Find out more in Kim Hofmanns latest article.

An update from the Friends of Harfield Parks
The Friends of Harfield Parks had a good work party in Hampstead Park last month, focusing on the Secret Garden, the surrounding beds and the Vegetable Garden. They’re all looking great!
FOHP have asked Council, if they have budget, to put a brick paved entrance and pathway into Hampstead Park and to replace the picnic table that has succumbed to dry rot.
Watering the Parks
Irrigation has now been added to the last section of Hampstead Park so that the whole park is now under irrigation, as are Surrey and Princes Parks.
However, with the looming drought and Level 3 water restrictions from 1 November (no hose pipes, only buckets), will mean no irrigation in the parks.
The Friends of Harfield Parks request that residents assist in carrying buckets of water (preferably grey water) to the park to help the plants and trees survive though summer.
To help keep the moisture from evaporating a deep mulch will need to be added around all the plants. Donations for mulch would be greatly appreciated!
Water Restrictions
At the moment the allocated watering times are: Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday – before 9am and after 4pm.
However as of 1 November - Level 3 Water Restrictions come into force meaning NO HOSEPIPES may be used, only buckets are permitted for watering plants and washing cars.
