Your guide to what's happening in and around Harfield Village

September 2016
Dear Subscriber
If you missed the latest newsletters view them here.
Spring has sprung! There’s nothing as beautiful as spring….. The trees are boasting fresh new bright green leaves and blossoms. Although there is still a nip in the air one feels more energetic and enthusiastic as the days become longer and warmer.
This month's newsletter is packed with great articles, events as well as news about the 2nd Annual Harfield Village Garden Competition, and we would love you to take part in our Harfield Village VoiceMap Tour Survey.
We love hearing from you, our readers, so please send us feedback: admin@harfield-village.co.za
Last week the Friends of Harfield Parks put out a donation request to raise the last R5000 needed to complete the last section of Hampstead Park’s irrigation system, to water the area under the playground equipment.
The good news is that as a result of the local businesses and community members they have raised enough money to complete the irrigation project. It is scheduled to be installed in the second week of October.
The Friends of Harfield Parks and Norgarb Properties (who donated R1000) along with Heads Properties (R500), are truly grateful to the wonderful residents and business owners in Harfield who so willingly support these projects. In the words of Gail Brown it is “Heart-warming to be a Harfielder!”

Are you aware of the audio guided historical Harfield Village Tour?

There is usually a charge to use the app but at a cost of R3000 sponsorship from Norgarb Properties the service has been freely available to anyone wishing to give it go.
The VoiceMap Tour involves an educational stroll around the village using your smart phone and earphones and is cleverly linked to Google Maps which works out your location at any given moment in time. There are numerous other such tours in Cape Town for those interested. For more info on how the tour works please click here……
We are conducting research into public awareness about this tour. For example did you know about it? Have you tried it? We would be very grateful to our readers if they would take a moment to respond to our super quick survey on this.
If you have not taken the approx 20 min stroll yet and would like to, please do and we would welcome your feedback also using the survey questionnaire.
Follow this link to our survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TXMYKLC or click on the button below.
We appreciate your time and effort in contributing to this survey. The stats will be published in the next newsletter.

As we all know, good nutrition is an important component of a balanced healthy life, but unfortunately we sometimes get lost as to what good nutrition really is!
The basics are easy, eat lots of vegetables and fruit, choose whole grains, eat low fat dairy and lean meat, include healthy plant fats, and avoid processed and junk food.
Are you however accomplishing your weight and health goals? Kim Hofmann goes into more detail in her article, click here to read it.
The Friends of Harfield Parks work tirelessly to maintain and upgrade the four parks.
This month they focus on the Hampstead Park Veggie Garden. The idea behind this garden is that residents can stroll down and pick a few leaves to make a fresh salad or healthy veg pot.
We encourage the diversity of wild life found in the garden (birds, bees, butterflies, ladybirds, chameleons, etc.)

As temperatures start climbing plants are showing new growth and edibles such as vegies begin sprouting.
This is the perfect time to start planting! There is very little as rewarding as to harvest your fresh produce from your very own garden.

Animal Rescue Organisation is appealing to the public to please carefully consider the following before purchasing a small animal as a pet.
Small pets such as bunnies (rabbits) and guinea pigs consume as much time and energy as for example dogs and cats.
These small animals are sold by Pet Shops at reasonably cheap prices but make their money by selling all the accessories for these pets. They also tend to assure you that you will purchase two of the same sex but many customers end up with babies a few months later. To have these animals sterilised will cost you as much as it does for a cat. Read the full story here. Currently Animal Rescue Organisation do have many gorgeous, friendly bunnies and guinea pigs up for adoption. So if you are looking to acquire a small pet, please consider adopting a rescue in their care.
Local Harfield Village resident, Madge Gibson, shares and interesting article on the topic of Restraint of Trade Contracts in which she points out important facts that you as employee or employer may not be aware of.
Claremont Chiropractic Health Centre highlights the fact that the sacroiliac joints often cause hip pain.
More likely, a hereditary hip condition such as dysplasia can cause joint pain of the sacroiliac joint, but chronic SIJ subluxations can also be the underlying cause of hip arthritis.
This being said, it is difficult to prove, or disprove for that matter as both are intrinsically part of the pelvis.
Thus a condition in the hip joint itself, can immediately have a knock-on effect on the sacroiliac joint.
