We live in Harfield Village and over the last two winters we could not help but notice the large number of learners from a local primary school that arrive at school sopping wet on rainy mornings. The majority of the children at the school make use of public transport and have to walk to local pick up locations and then often still have to wait in long queues for transport. The result is that often in winter these children arrive at school drenched in rain and freezing cold. This must be a terrible way to start the day and surely hampers their ability to concentrate and learn during the long school day that follows.
With the school’s permission we have started an initiative to raise sufficient funds to purchase a good quality reusable rain poncho (R 45 per poncho) for every child in the school. There are 680 children in the school, bringing our total goal to R30,600.
