JULY 2025 IN THE GARDEN

Hi Harfielders,

The rains arrived convincingly in late June, around the Winter Solstice – the shortest day and longest night of the year. From here on, the days will slowly lengthen as we head towards Spring, but we still have some cold months and rain ahead of us.

This month’s planting list is shorter than usual:

Broad beans, beetroot, chard/spinach, Cape gooseberry, celery, chives, chili peppers, lettuce, onion, parsley, peas, potatoes, radishes, and tomatoes.

Remember, planting in the right months gives your plants the best chance at thriving. Also, keep an eye on what’s in season at the shops – it’s often a good indicator of what grows well right now.

Stay warm, and where you can, consider sharing a meal or a blanket with one of the many fellow South Africans struggling through the winter.
