2020 Harfield Village Carnival CANCELLED – HVCID Statement

Dear Residents and Local Businesses.

The HVCID committee advises, with regret, that the Harfield Village Carnival will not be held in 2020.

This is as a result of a reduction in sponsorship and a substantial increase in expenses, which we would need to incur to satisfy the City of Cape Town, in order to secure a special event permit.

As a result of how popular the carnival has become, attracting people from all over the Western Cape, the City requires the organisers to provide more infrastructure, including additional security and traffic officials, hiring of toilets and road traffic signs, disposal of waste and the premium for the public liability.

The income generated from stallholders and sponsors is not sufficient to cover these expenses. The HVCID committee is holding discussions with interested parties and we will keep residents advised, if the situation changes for 2021.

We thank you for your amazing support of the event over the past 2 years.

Kind regards
JENNI COLEMAN (Manager – Harfield Village Community Improvement District (HVCID)

Poisoned Gum Tree in Kenilworth

A historical gum tree in Wessels Road, Kenilworth, was the latest tree to be poisoned. The City of Cape Town has raised concerns about the “malicious” poisoning of a tenth gum tree since October. Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien said: “The intentional destruction of trees is worrying as it indicates the lengths some will go to, to destroy trees that play such a vital role in the eco-system and urban landscape. Apart from the aesthetic value, trees also have environmental benefits such as cooling, shade for people, providing a safe space for birds and the absorption of carbon dioxide.  Trees could also add up to 15% to property values and save on air-conditioning costs which is an economic benefit. The City views this illegal activity in a serious light and we will investigate this to hold those responsible to account.”

Badroodien has asked residents to inform the city arborist of suspected poisoning by e-mailing arborist@capetown.gov.za or calling one of the council’s emergency numbers (107 from a landline,
021-480-7700 from a cellphone).

SLOW DOWN OR THE YEAR WILL BE OVER BEFORE YOU KNOW IT!

Life tends to speed up as we get older or so it seems. The months just fly by and before long it’s December again. This is just a perception really– we know that time is moving just as slowly or fast as it always has.

The question to ask oneself is, how can we go back to those ‘good old’ childhood days where time seemed to take forever.  Kim Hofmann explains more here.
